This is the first in what I hope to be a series of caches that
showcase the beautiful villages of East Lothian, starting with the
best of them all - Dirleton *.
You won’t find a real Porridge Lane in Dirleton but if you take this gentle stroll from the centre of the village, you’ll see the Water Tower and Oatfield House which mixed together would give the basis of Scotland’s favourite breakfast. If you’re out early enough, you might actually get a sniff of the delicacy emanating from the hotel kitchen that you’ll pass on the way.
Watch out for the finger that points towards where the cache is hidden just a few steps away.
While you’re in Dirleton, don’t just cache’n’dash.
Take time to visit the magnificent 12th century castle, doocot and turret that dominate the village, complete with lovely gardens and possibly the most picturesque bowling green in use in Scotland today.
Take a seat on the village green where you'll probably hear the cows at the farm or you might see some horses and riders trotting by. Then go and visit the 17th century church with its interesting graveyard, just down the road.
There are two excellent establishments for eating and drinking and before you leave, why not take a trip to the Gallery or post a postcard from that rare 21st century thing -the Village Post Office.
