Geocache Description:

This cache is a Multicache and has been placed to celebrate my Nephews 9th Birthday and is centred around the village of Broadhembury. In order to find the ubiquitous tupperware box you will need to find the six waypoints located in and around the village and record the information you find there so don’t forget to bring a pen and paper with you.

You need to solve the following:

N (C)(F)° (C)(F).(A-D)(A)(F+D) W 00(A+D)° (E).(F)(B)(A)

Replace each letter shown above with a number found and calculated at the waypoints given in this cache listing

Please note the coordinates given at the top of this listing are for the 1st Question to Answer location. Parking is located in the centre of the village (and this is given as an additional waypoint below) and should be regarded as the start of the cache trail.

Broadhembury is an attractive unspoilt 17th Century estate village in heart of East Devon.

In 1603 Edward Drewe, Sergeant at Law to Elizabeth I bought land from the former Dunkeswell Abbey and made the Grange his family seat. Much of the present day village consists of houses with cob walls and thatched roofs, dating from this time. In 1903 the village came up for sale as the last of the Drewe lineage died out, and the estate including the village was bought by the founder of the Home and Colonial Stores, Julius Drewe (same name - different family!) who had previously commissioned the building of Castle Drogo. The same family still own the vast majority of the village even today and the village still gives the impression that little has changed in all this time apart from the modern forms of transport.

The beautiful proportioned church dedicated to St Andrew dates mainly from the 15th Century. Augustus Montague Toplady, who wrote the hymn wrote “Rock of Ages” was the parson here from 1768-1778.

Please note all the waypoints are easily accessible if you are either a pedestrian or a cyclist but the best way to admire this beautiful Devon village is on foot.
If you are a disabled cacher all but one of the clues or waypoints (excluding the Playing Field- Park Question to answer) can be viewed from a vehicle, but assistance would be required to retrieve the cache from its final resting place.

Refreshments can be found in the village close to the parking coordinates. I am afraid the public toilets that were in the village have now been closed by the council, so make sure you go before you come over!

Please be safety conscious if you have small children or animals as the village does not have any footpaths or in fact any street lights so please be aware of this when you are out and about.
Waypoints are shown below for parking and navigation where necessary. Please follow the Waypoints in the following order in order to see as much of the village as possible. Although we have listed a dogs allowed Attribute (for the village in general) please note dogs are not allowed in the Churchyard or the children’s playground. If you do have a dog just follow the doggie instructions mentioned below.

PLEASE make sure that when you replace the cache you push it well into its hide so that it does not fall down and it remains hidden and out of sight.

PARKING N 50°50.123, W 003°16.683

If you have a dog just take the road to the left of the stone cross, (this is an alternative route to the second waypoint). As you arrive at the Lytch Gate you will pass the oldest house in the village on your right.
Once through the Lytch Gate just follow your GPS along the path to the 1st Waypoint.
