A semi-challenging hike up a decommissioned logging road that has fallen victim to several washouts. After another uphill stroll along a pretty good trail one is treated to the fabulous view of Discovery Lake! The cache is a clear waterproof container with a log and a few other items.
Access the area using the same roads used to visit the Wynoochee Lake Recreation area. The North / South access road is the Wynoochee Valley road heading North from Montesano. The Western approach is from the Donkey Creek road off of highway 101 North of Humptulips. Once near the lake, follow the Northbound road on the East side of the lake until you reach the large wildlife gate. This gate is open from May 1st of each year to October 1st of the same year. Take a left just past the gate and drive until you find the parking coordinates. Parking is available at N 47.30.020 W 123.4.818. Fairly level walk along the old access road with the exception of the washouts that must be crossed. The trails are quite obvious as to the alternate routes around the erosion. The road begins to climb near the end. At the end of the road the trailhead begins off the left edge of the road at N 47.30.423 W 123.4.092. This portion of the hike is only .4 miles but uphill most of the way with a few trees across the trail. The cache is located under a large rock on the side of the lake below Discovery Peak. Be sure to check out the large boulder in the lake on the North side. A spoiler picture is added should it be needed. The total roundtrip distance is just under 3 miles.
