Geocache Description:

This cache is located on Shankill Beach. Shankill is coastal town south of Dublin. To access the beach walk down a small lane at the end of Quinn's Road. Look out for the resident seal, who is often seen swimming around the beach and sunbathing on the rocks at low tide. Check the tides because sometimes the water is too high to reach the cache safely.

The name Shankill actually comes from the Irish Sean Choill, meaning Old Wood. The lane at the end of Quinn's Road is a beautiful walk down to the beach. At the beginning of the lane is Shankill tennis courts. Opposite the courts is Clontra, a Gothic mansion with a few horses that like to be fed. Just before the beach you walk under the the original Kingstown-Bray train line now defunct due to erosion.

A coastal wall was built from Killiney to Bray to try to stop the erosion; traces of this can still be seen along the beach. The medieval village of Longnon was sited some 200 yards (180 m) east of the beach, but was completely obliterated by coastal erosion.
