The Cannonball Run Traditional Cache
TheTilleyHat: This was my first cache, so while I have some sentimental attachment to it, I was always a little uncomfortable about it being located so close to traffic whizzing by. Since I assume this was muggled by a roadside maintenance crew, it will probably disappear again, so this is probably a good time to disable it. I'll find another spot for The Cannonball Run cars to come back to and will post a note here when I have done so. Thanks to all of you who stopped by this cache.

A quick cache and dash near the westbound Thruway rest stop near Rochester Exit 45.
To drive right up to the cache you'll need to take Thruway Exit 45 and drive a few miles. You can also take a 20-minute walk (one mile round trip) to the cache from the westbound Thruway rest stop just before Exit 45. To do so, begin your walk at the employee parking lot at N42 59.9791 / W077.24.7999
An homage to the movie entitled "The Cannonball Run", this cache features three race cars (red, white, and blue). Their goal is win a cross country race from New York to California and back again. Bragging rights go to the first car (and its caching pit crews who help it along the way) to reach Rodondo Beach, California and return to The Cannonball Run cache in New York.
LIKE ALL GOOD PIT CREWS, BEWARE OF FAST MOVING CARS CLOSE BY!
There is a Sacagawea gold dollar coin for the FTF.
The first three westbound Thruway travelers are each asked to take ONE of the red, white, or blue race cars, and get them started westbound on their race to Calfornia. This is a road race only - no plane travel please.
For other cachers, there are assorted keytags as trade items. In keeping with the road race theme for this cache, please trade only key chains and other small travel bugs.
The movie is based on the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, an actual cross-country outlaw road race from the Red Ball Garage in New York City to the pier at Redondo Beach, California, just south of Los Angeles. The race was organized by automotive journalist and the movie's screenwriter Brock Yates. Some of the more interesting aspects based on real life include the "ambulance" entry and the "all female entry."
Cachers too young to remember the movie can check out: The Cannonball Run wikipedia page.
Congrats to WAM86 on the FTF!
