netcrash: Eulogy for GC2DXPJ – “Train Cache”
After fifteen years of loyal service, countless stories, and 188 happy finds, it is time to say farewell to this little geocache hidden beneath the old steam train in the Children’s Park.
When I placed this cache back in 2010, I hoped it would do one simple thing: show visitors a beloved corner of my hometown. Over the years, it did far more than that. It became a quiet ambassador for Yerevan - guiding travelers into a park they might never have discovered, pointing them toward a piece of local history, and offering a moment of exploration and playfulness beneath the wheels of a retired locomotive.
Through this cache I met several geocachers from around the world - people who reached out for a coffee or a beer while passing through Armenia. Those conversations, some brief and some that turned into friendships, are memories I will always cherish. This small green container brought people together, and that is perhaps the greatest treasure it ever held.
The train is now gone, and so this cache must follow it into retirement. But the logs, the smiles, the stories, and the footsteps left in the park over the years will stay. Thank you to everyone who searched for it, found it, DNF’d it, messaged me, or simply added one more moment of life to its long run.
Goodbye, old friend. You served well.
