This earthcache leads you into the picturesque volcanic region of the Haute-Loire.

The Haute-Loire is an area bristling with volcanic peaks.
Very impressing are the volcanic rocks in Le-Puy-En-Velay and Polignac.

Le Puy-en-Velay, which until 1998 was called Le Puy, is the capital of the département of Haute-Loire. The Romans called it Anicium. It is located near the Loire River, on the Massif Central, about 66 miles southwest of Lyon. It is one of the most picturesque cities in France.

At the edge of town is a 260 foot high volcanic needle with the 10th - 11th century chapel of Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe purched upon it. The church was ingeniously designed and constructed upon the rock’s irregular surfaces. The ruins of the 14th century castle of Polignac are located on a basalt plateau about 3 miles away.

The castle of Polygnac is buit on top of one of the many 'Puys' in this area. A Puy is an eroded basalt-pilar which was an old vulcano pipe. The harder basalt in the pipe resisted and became these tubes or Puys sticking out.

La Haute-Loire est un département de montagnes d'origine volcanique. Les roches volcaniques au Puy-en-Velay et à Polignac sont très impressionnantes.

Le Puy-en-Velay, appelé le Puy jusqu'en 1998, est la préfecture du département de la Haute-Loire. Les romains l'appelaient Anicium. La ville est située en bordure de la Loire, dans le Massif Central, environ à 135 km au Sud-Ouest de Lyon. C'est l'une des plus pittoresques villes de France.

Un rocher volcanique de 80m surplombe la ville avec la chapelle de Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe (10ième - 11ième siècle) perchée à son sommet. Cette chapelle a été construite avec ingéniosité sur ce rocher irrégulier. A 5 km de distance se situent les ruines du château de Polignac sur un plateau basaltique.

Le château de Polignac est érigé au sommet d'un des nombreux puys de la région. Un puy est un "pilier" de basalte érrodé qui était autrefois le coeur d'un volcan (la cheminée du volcan) . Le basalte du coeur du volcan est plus dur et résiste à l'érosion, ce qui forme ces rochers en forme de pilier.

To log this earthcache you have to examine the puy on which the castle was built. The coordinates lead you to a possible parking space. Leave your car there and start walking up to the castle. You do not have to enter the castle as you have to pay for it (but it is definitely worth it). Walk up towards the entry to the castle and just before you reach it, look out for this information plaque:

Pour valider cette cache vous devez examiner le puy sur lequel le château est construit. Vous n'avez pas besoin d'entrer dans le château (l'entrée est payante mais cela vaut le coup). Marchez jusqu'à l'entrée, juste avant, trouvez le panneau d'information:

From there you can admire the way they kind of melted the castle buildings with the basalt stone. Take a picture of your gps device (and yourself, if you want to) in front of one of these melting areas of the puy and the castle. Additionally, estimate the height of the wall and describe the characteristics of the stone and send me your answers via email. Logs without picture or answer will be deleted.

Depuis ce point vous pouvez admirer la manière dont la construction du château "se mêle" au rocher de basalte. Prenez une photo de votre GPS (et de vous si vous voulez) devant la jonction du rocher et du chateau.
