Mill Street is, as the name suggests, a street which used to go to the site of a mill located in the City of Wells.
There is no longer a mill, but the stream is still visible, appearing for a very short stretch above ground, before decending underground once more. The Mill has since been demolished, but residences and buildings nearby reportedly still contain some of the salvaged stone that was originally from the mill.
Water flows out of St. Andrew's Well at a rate of 40 gallons per second into the moat around the Bishop's Palace (at the top of Wells Highstreet) which holds 4 million gallons. The overflow sends water decending underground at the southern-most point of the moat, and this is the water that is visible from Mill Street.
This water then joins the Kewerd Brook and then the River Sheppey, which in turn joins the River Brue. The River Sheppey originates in Doulting, outside Shepton Mallet, and one of the springs (at St. Aldhelm's Well) is both easy to get to and has a nearby cache. The River Brue then joins the sea at Burnham-on-Sea, joining the River Severn as it rushes into the Bristol Channel.
At ground zero there is a sign with information about the site.
