James John Floyd (1750 – April 10, 1783), better known as John Floyd, was a pioneer of the Midwestern United States frontier near the Louisville, Kentucky area where he worked as a surveyor for land development and as a military figure. Floyd was an early settler of St. Matthews, Kentucky and helped lay out the city of Louisville.

On 14 September 1781, after a number of settlers had been massacred by Indians along a stream known as Long Run, a party of about 30 men commanded by Colonel John Floyd came to bury the dead and avenge the massacre. They were, in turn, tragically attacked by the same war party of Miami and Huron Indians led by "Captain" Joseph 'Monster' Brant, and over half of their party were captured or killed.

A monument (right) was erected by the State of Kentucky near the scene of the two battles, but it was incorrect.

A historic marker along nearby U.S. 60 erroneously calls the skirmish 'the worst massacre' in Kentucky history. That marker, #991 is currently 'missing', perhaps due to road construction and reports a much higher number of dead.

Debate continues today over the actual number of men, women and children killed in the attacks, but their burial site is nearby.
The monument has been 'corrected' and a plaque mounted to protect this version of the eroding historical record

The listed coordinate will bring you near the monument (pictured above) which has a corrected error. Parking is available across the street in the post office side lot.

To determine the north coordinate, add the last two digits of the erroneous year on the monument to the north coordinate for this listing. The next stage and last motor stop is here:

The container, about the size of a 35mm, can be located 122 feet in reverse of the direction indicated.
