Mille Pond was dammed by the first Guilford settlers as early as
1658. It was the result of some strategic planning, diverting the
flow of West River into a bypass loop to feed the pond. The mill
pond was also used as a source of ice in wintertime to be cut and
stored for refrigeration of food.Long wooden icehouses were located
on the narrow sloping bank between the pond edge and North River
Street. When the ice was 8 inches thick, it could be harvested.
Today the Mill Pond is mostly just a place to relax and meditate
or maybe do a little fishing. In the winter however, when the ice
is thick enough, you can ice skate here. The town puts up signs
alerting you if the ice is ok to skate on. The town also provides
small fire pits in metal drums, so you can warm your hands. There
are a couple of picnic benches and there is light, so you can skate
at night. Unfortunately the conditions don't often allow for this
activity to take place.
