This cache is located at the end of St. Mary's Street south of the Canadian Northern Railway Station, which is now the home of the Calgary Ballet. Near the cache site is St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Mary's High School, and the Sacred Heart Convent which is located on the property SW of the cache site.

Father Lacombe is a well-known missionary, remembered for the peace he negotiated between the Cree and Blackfoot nations, for helping to unite Canada by his involvement in creating an agreement with the Blackfoot to allow the CPR to cross their lands, and for helping to persuade the Blackfoot chief, Crowfoot , to not join the NW Rebellion of 1885.

The first St. Mary’s school was founded in 1885, on land granted by Father Lacombe. This site was in the village of Rouleauville (now the Mission District), south of the town of Calgary. Alberta did not yet exist, and these centres were part of the Northwest Territories. St. Mary’s was originally housed in a two storey log cabin, and has existed in several locations in this vicinity during the last 125 years.

St. Mary’s from the turn of the century.

In 1905, Alberta became a province, separate from the Northwest Territories. In 1907, Calgary annexed Rouleauville, and St. Mary’s Street was renamed 19th Avenue.

Due to the public nature of the cache site, the hint is very specific. Please use it to increase the longevity of this cache.
