How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Here's how it works:

  • Park your car at one of the given parking waypoints.
  • Go to the given trail head (see waypoint THEAD below). This is just off Mainway, a relatively busy road with no roadside parking. You'll have to walk along the road for at least a bit.
  • Make your way towards the posted header coordinates. There's a skimpy beaten path going there from the trail head and white firetacks have been placed along this trail to help guide your way. The firetacks are spaced quite far apart, so don't rely on them alone to get to your destination!
  • Once you get to the coordinates, you have entered the Sheldon Creek Woodlot, which extends roughly to the northeast from here. The trail ends here, but the firetacks will guide you further. There's no trails running inside the woodlot at all, you'll need to bushwhack your way around, which may be easy or difficult depending on the time of year. There's also some pieces of leftover wire fence on the ground, so be careful where you step.
  • Somewhere in this woodlot (which is a nicely big and open area that's surrounded by farmers' fields on all sides), there are two trees that are marked with white firetacks all around. Your mission is to find those two trees. They have plenty of firetacks on all sides of them, which makes them relatively easy to see and recognize.
  • From the posted header coordinates, there are white firetacks to help you find your way to those two marked trees. Note that these firetacks aren't necessarily meant to guide you on a direct and straight path to your destination, so expect to do some meandering.
  • Once you find one of your target trees (the ones with the white firetacks all around them), use your GPS to mark a waypoint at this location (at the tree). You will want to use any "averaging" feature of your GPS to get a waypoint that's as accurate as possible.
  • Continue following the white firetacks until your find the second marked tree. Again mark a waypoint here.
  • Now you have two waypoints (the two marked trees). Together with the two given reference points (see additional waypoints below, waypoints AAAA and BBBB - there's nothing there, don't go there) you have four waypoints total.
  • Using those four waypoints: X marks the spot!

Get it? There's several ways of doing this, and it's up to you to figure out how. Some involve mathematics, others involve technology. With any half decent handheld GPS device, all you should need is your GPS (and some braincells). It's highly recommended that you find a usable method that you can use in the field before you head out and attempt this cache.

This is a night time only cache! You will have to use your flashlight to locate the firetracks mentioned above. Firetacks are thumbtacks with reflective tape on them. They become visible by shining your flashlight onto them and will then light up quite brightly. Since they reflect the light back the same way that it came from, you will see them best if you hold your flashlight as close to your eyes as possible. Headlamps are recommended. Obviously it needs to be dark for this to work.

The cache is a small Lock & Lock container, painted brown. There's an unactivated geocoin as FTF prize.

Good luck and have fun!
