Four the fallen (Canterbury) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

abl973: Its been six months since the destructive February 22nd 2011 quake and almost a year since the very first quake (September 4th 2011) that changed everything here in Christchurch forever.

The bridge that provided a hiding place for this cache doesn't look like its going to be repaired anytime soon. It has been shifted upwards close to a metre. I'm amazed cars and trucks can still use the bridge. The river is also prone to flooding which is evident by the construction of new flood banks and that a friend of mine who lives nearby has complained that he's had his property under water - its not deep, but deep enough to fill his garage with water.

Thanks to all those who have found this cache and to those who have placed or picked up travel bugs and the occasional coin.

Geocache Description:

After the February 22nd 2011 earthquake the hiding place of where the cache was hidden has changed dramatically. The bridge has been lifted and shifted substantially which has exposed what was a good hide. The cache has gone, I've looked several times for it. At first I thought it was crushed but after lifting some concrete where it should have been I found nothing.

I've uploaded a few photos of the quake damage here. I had thought about relocating it nearby but this bridge will need rebuilding and in doing so it won't be appropriate to have a cache too near. For now I'll archive this and maybe one day when I return to it I can re-enable it.

-----

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Welcome to State Highway 74 or as it is now known, ANZAC Drive which services the eastern suburbs of Christchurch connecting the city to its port town of Lyttelton. However, you won't find the cache on ANZAC Drive. You will instead need to leave the car and walk or cycle along the separate path provided.

If travelling by car it is best approached from Hulverstone Drive where a carpark and a playground for the junior cachers can be found.

You are looking for a 400ml camouflaged systema snap lock container not far off your path with log book and pencil. There is room for small travel bugs and swaps.

*** Remember to hide it back behind natures camouflage
