There has been a railway line at Hilton Station for over 130 years, but sadly now all that remains is just a shadow of its former glory. What once was a bustling station; with trains puffing up from Pietermaritzburg is now a garden nursery and a quiet graveyard for some rusting leviathans of the steam era. The railway line down to Pietermaritzburg has been taken up and the line onwards to Cedara has been vandalised by persons unknown stealing the valuable wooden sleepers.
There used to be a small museum in the old original ticket office so you can see what it was like in those glorious bygone years when life was at a slower pace, but that is now closed.
It is however very encouraging to note that a working steam engine and also a working steam crane are situated in the station and can be viewed hissing and puffing on most Saturday mornings.
Unfortunately due to vagrants and criminals pervading the station and stealing parts from the steam locos, the station is now cordoned off by an electric fence installed in May 2018, so access is limited and the cache has been moved to outside the station.
But in 2019 a Coffee Shop was opened in the old station ticket office and cachers are encouraged to support this endeavour and explore the station.
