A very large Anchor in a small South Gippsland town.
With the original cache container going missing after just one geocacher visit, we decided to relocate the hide a few metres "aweigh" from the the big anchor.
This is a fascinating stop off.
Although rather neglected there is a 5 senses garden, with colour, touch, feel and so forth.
Clean toilets, a decent kids playground, picnic tables and plenty of shade.
A sheltered gazebo with a little history of the area is nearby.
Welshpool in South Gippsland is just a sleepy little town today, but during the heyday around the early 1970’s with the massive upsurge of oil exploration, with supply boats being tied up to 3 abreast at the jetty of Barry Beach Marine Terminal, and also at times alongside at the Long Jetty at Port Welshpool.
The pub at Welshpool was a favourite with locals and mining people alike. There was a floor show each Saturday night, with singers and musicians coming from Melbourne and the place rocked. We can remember Helen Reddy coming there one night and the place was packed.
The very large anchor sitting here alongside the highway is 22500lbs, or 10 tons in weight. It is known as a stockless anchor. This one is probably from a large cargo vessel.
