PLEASE RELOCATE CACHE CAREFULLY!

In April 1906 electric current became available in the Te Aroha Borough. This made
the Borough the first local body in the Thames Valley to provide this amenity. The
scheme relied solely on water power which was taken from the Tunakohoia and
Omahu Streams being stored in a small reservoir above Hamilton Street. From the
reservoir an 18 inch steel pipe delivered water to the Te Aroha Power House 150m
below the reservoir. A 100 horsepower Cassels Pelton wheel drove a 3,100 volt
generator here and these machines coupled to become known as the Number 1
Plant. This plant had a number of upgrades over the years until it became a standby
electricity source when bulk power from Arapuni Hydro Dam became available in
1923. It was demolished in 1974 with the remains still visible at 23a Hamilton Street.
The No.1 Generator is now located in the Cadman Museum along with bricks from
the power station building.

From here its a 15 minutes walk to the Tui Domain Walking track, which you can follow all the way to the Te Aroha Domain
