Number 30 on the Russell Heritage trail. If you are finding all our "Seat caches", you will have already found "Mary's Seat". This resting place really takes in the Bay. Watch for the dolphin boats, if they stop you are in luck!
Great views out to Motuarohia (Roberton) Island, Urupukapuka Island, and then out to the headland which people trek along to the hut at the Cape Brett Light House. After you have found this one, go down the very steep driveway to find the track to Long Beach to find "Farmer Stan's Seat". If it looks too steep, and slippery (in winter), follow Queen's View Road down to Long Beach. Karo (Pittosporum crassifolium) is a small coastal tree that is found growing naturally in northern New Zealand. Like pōhutukawa, a fellow coastal tree of the north, it has leathery leaves with woolly undersides. It flowers prolifically in spring to early summer, producing clusters of small, dark red to purple flowers. Karo has been widely used as a hedge plant in coastal locations throughout New Zealand. Birds readily spread its seed and in places south of its natural range, it has become a weed. It also seeds freely and has become naturalised on Norfolk Island and Hawaii. Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is found in coastal and lowland forests throughout the North Island and the northern half of the South Island. It is a small tree, growing to six metres tall, with dense branches. It is easily recognised by its heart-shaped leaves and jointed stems, which resemble bamboo stalks. The leaves are often pocked with holes caused by the looper caterpillar Cleora scriptaria.
