Geocache Description:

This cache provides a 9-stage walk through Durham's historic Maplewood Cemetery. Maplewood is a sprawling place, with many lovely headstones, quite a bit of interesting statuary, and numerous other visually-appealing points of interest. Though they are heavily represented in Maplewood, the individuals I've decided to share with you are by no means drawn exclusively from Durham's historically important or otherwise notable personages. I've opted instead for the visually-appealing, the curious, and even the downright neglected. Perhaps there's a notable or two thrown in there, though, just for variety.

For a fascinating history-focused tour of Maplewood, The Alethiometrists' "Dust to Dust" GC2F129 hits many of the more interesting and important highlights. And, who knows, maybe they threw in something obscure ... just for variety.

A Note on How "Ashes to Ashes" Works: As luck would have it, all of Maplewood Cemetery proper as well as the outside-of-the-cemetery Final for this cache have the same degrees and minutes for both latitude and longitude (i.e., all are of the form N 35° 59.ABC and W 078° 55.DEF). So, throughout "Ashes to Ashes", the cacher will only need to calculate the decimals for North and West.

I've used the device of a rhyming poem to lead you through Maplewood (mostly A-B-A-B rhyme scheme, but it does vary a bit). Each stanza describes the "target" of interest, the information to be collected, and (in italics) how the decimals for the location of the next target should be calculated. Stage one, for example, is a small, above-ground brick tomb. Identify the tomb-occupant's Year of Death and use that number to calculate the decimals for the North coordinates for stage two (Y.O.D. less 1281) and the decimals for the West coordinates for stage two (Y.O.D less 1813). You then seek stage two, an obelisk. And so on. Simple, really, but a bit different from the normal cemetery multi procedure.

I hope you enjoy your walk through Maplewood.
