Hanging Around Glooscap Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MainePublisher: All geocache placements must have a responsive owner. The cache owner must be able to respond to issues that come up and to submit an "owner maintenance" log to remove the "needs maintenance" icon.

In addition to the "needs maintenance" logs and DNF logs, Goundspeak also uses a Health Score algorithm. https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=38&pgid=713

In this case, Groundspeak has sent an email to the cache owner with no response. The cache owner did not respond to any of the cachers hoping to find the cache and did not respond to the reviewer note so the cache is now archived.

The cache location is now open for any Geocacher to place a new cache, including the original cache owner.

Geocache Description:

*Note- As of Summer 2019, Gloosgap is no longer here. Sadly he didn’t survive the winter. Glooscap ("Good Spirit") is a wooden sculpture of a North American created in 1983 by Peter Toth. He presented these statues as gifts to the fifty states and areas of Canada as part of the "Trail of Whispering Giants." While Glooscap, carved from a thirty foot elm weighing 17,000 pounds, greeted visitors to Bar Harbor for twenty years, the harsh weather took its toll. By 2003, he had rotted and was in danger of tumbling over. A local businessman couldn't let that happen, so when the town put the statue up for auction, he had the highest bid - $200! After working on him for more than two hundred hours and spending over $1,500, he'd succeeded in fully restoring Glooscap. The interior is strengthened with 6,000 pounds of concrete, two hundred feet of rods, one hundred lag bolts and more. The exterior has been repainted and sits on a wood-encased 20,000 pound concrete base. Thankfully, we can still enjoy this wonderful piece of history for years to come. This cache was placed with the campground's permission. Many of the employees and campers enjoy watching the hunt for it, so enjoy! The cache is NOT hidden on Glooscap. On July 23,2011 the cache was moved to a location within sight of Gloosgap. New coordinates are: N 44' 25.866 and W 068' 16.307. The owner was concerned that all the attention might cause damage. Please go see him; just don't touch! Thanks.
