The East Somerset Railway was incorporated on 5th June 1856 and was built as a broad gauge line. The line was originally between Witham railway station and Shepton Mallet. This line opened on 9th November 1858. It was later extended to Wells and this part of the line was opened on 1st March 1862. The East Somerset Railway was bought by the Great Western Railway on 2 December 1874.The line was a casualty of the Beeching Axe and closed to passengers in 1963.The section from Dulcote Quarry to Witham remained open until 1969 for stone transportation.

The cache side of the bridge faces towards Shepton Mallet. The "lay by" the other side is actually a passing space constructed by BR when the bridge was demolished. This side faces towards the former Wells - East Somerset station
