Geocache Description:

Before they were used for walking and cycling they had an important role in the realisation of the T&W Metro system. In 1974 construction began on the T&W Metro Test Centre and Line. The line was 2.4km in length and consisted of a single running line from West Allotment in the north to the Coast Road in the south.

The Test centre and track closed its doors in July 1980, just before the opening of the main system. It had served as a very useful testing ground and during its 5 year life.

The cache is a nano cache.

The paths where the cache is hidden have been built on the old Backworth mineral railway, which runs through Backworth and beyond, right down to the river Tyne. They are now part of the National Cycle Network and are quite busy at times.

The best place to park is at the Silverlink Retail Park.
