Geocache Description:

A simple traditional cache to bring you to the impressive Bronze Age hillfort of Ring of the Rath and enjoy the views.

Rathgall Hillfort, also known as Ring of the Rath, is one of the most important Late Bronze Age sites in Ireland. It consists of 4 circular enclosures, three of earth and the central one of stone, which dates from medieval times. Excavations beginning in 1969 revealed a large circular house, pits where cremated remains were buried, and a very large workshop with over 4000 fragments of clay moulds used for making swords, spearheads and axes. Gold and glass beads indicate that this was a high status site, the residence of an important family, perhaps the sponsors of the metal workers on the site.
The hill was occupied intermittently through the Iron Age and beyond to medieval times: a strap-tag from a Roman military uniform dating from the second century AD was also found.
The cache is not located on the monument but close by in a public area, and won't cause any problems with the archaeology.
