Geocache Description:

Hoggard's cache is located within the Buzzards Roost Nature Preserve in Chillicothe, OH. The preserve began about 10 years ago, when Jean Barnhart donated a 383-acre tract to Ross County in memory of her late husband, Earl H. Barnhart. Since then, the preserve has grown to 1,332 acres. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna. It has two trails: Hoggards Trail and South Point Lookout Trail which has an amazing view atop black sandstone cliffs overlooking Paint Creek.
Hoggards Trail is a 0.56 mile one way trail. You will pass a vernal pool (a muddy puddle alongside the trail) where you will see the tracks of many wild animals and maybe even a salamander or frog. You will then pass under towering pines that were planted in the 1930s as part of a WPA work program to help put unemployed people to work after the Great Depression Further along the trail is a waterfall and up the hill you will pass the Hoggard family cemetary. Past this the trail continues through a thick grove of pines and by a small pond.
The cache is a standard size ammo can just off the trail so no need to bushwack or disturb the undergrowth. We hope you enjoy this hidden gem in Ross County as much as our family does.
To get to the Buzzards Roost Nature Preserve, take U.S. 50 west from Chillicothe. Turn left (south) on Polk Hollow Road. Proceed about 1.8 miles to the top of a steep hill. Make a sharp right turn onto Red Bird Lane. The road dead-ends into the preserve.
