Geocache Description:

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE TRYING TO FIND THIS CACHE!

This ammo can is hidden near Square Falls, which is along the East Branch of the Sacandaga River in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area. From the parking area, it is a very interesting 1.2-mile hike each way along the East Branch Sacandaga Gorge.

Below is an excerpt from page 40 of the Adirondack Mountain Club's Adirondack Trails - Central Region trail guide:

"The winding road dead-ends at 0.1 mi. A path extends onward a short distance to a crossing of a small stream. On the opposite side, the path heads L for 20 yd and then abruptly turns R and climbs a little grade. A few more yards of travel and the East Branch can be seen L below. The route continues N (upstream). The trail splits briefly, but soon rejoins.

At 0.3 mi, a side trail branches L 30 yd to the rocky riverbank, where a double cable stretches across the creek..."

According to our GPS, this cable was actually at 0.5 miles. The guidebook goes on to suggest that you rock-hop to the opposite bank of the river just upstream from the double cable. However, we never crossed the river. We stayed on the east (right) side of the river and just continued on the unmarked (but obvious) trail, which took us all the way to the falls.

While the guidebook says that this is an unmaintained trail, it is well-worn and someone has chainsaw-cut some trees that fell across the trail. There are some spots where the trail fades a little, but it is easy to figure out which way to continue. There is also a short, moderately-steep climb at about 0.8 miles, and a short, moderately-steep descent at about 0.9 miles.

The geocache is an ammo can hidden not far off the trail, about 100 feet before the trail ends at Square Falls. There is also another neat but smaller waterfall about 250 feet upstream from Square Falls.

The label on the ammo can says that "Square Falls" is the name of this geocache. We came up with what we thought was a better name once we got back home.

This is the first cache that we've hidden with our four-month old son, RyanXY. We hope that you enjoy the hike and the falls as much as we did.
