This cache was placed to bring you to the Cannery Divers Memorial at San Carlos Beach Park. The bronze diver's helmet commemorates the contributions of Cannery Divers to Monterey's world famous sardine fishing and canning industry. It's been said that Cannery Row could not have happened without them.
In order to unload the larger boats of the 1930s, floating wooden hoppers had to be anchored to the bottom of the bay. Pipes that pumped sardines ashore from the hoppers had to be installed, repaired, replaced, realigned and maintained in order for the canneries of old Monterey to begin and operate a full six month season each year. Cannery Divers were essential to the very operation of the canneries.
San Carlos Beach, often called Breakwater, preserves a number of cannery ruins. It is also recognized as the #1 Shore Dive Beach in the USA, with many thousands of recreational scuba divers visiting each year, including myself. I may be watching you from the water!
Original cache was a micro scuba cylinder that I used as a keychain when I got my open water certification. Replaced with camo'ed container. Log only, BYOP. Please be stealthy, rehide carefully, and have fun!
