Geocache Description:

This cache is located in what used to be Sherry Cemetery. It is located behind the well deteriorated church. There is now only one tombstone left. It is the marker of Miles Goodson. There used to be 19 marked graves here. It was told to us, by the secretary/treasurer of this church, that it is rumored, that a disgruntled preacher removed the other markers from this cemetery.

Many of the graves located here belong to people who used to sharecrop for a man named Lennox that owned 2500 acres in the bottom land. It was said that at times the dead were carried out of the bottom land by hand as it was to muddy to remove them any other way.

The original church was of log construction that was near the tree line. It was moved about 200' from that location towards the town by horses. It was moved by rolling it on logs. This church burnt down on Easter Sunday in 1969. At that time, the present building was a school. It was converted to the church. In 1974 members fixed the building up, adding electricity and water.

At that time, there were plenty of members. They used to do a meal once a month. There was a table built of wooden planks built between the trees in front. This is still an active church, there are books still kept and it still has an active bank account. As time passed the membership fell off as with many churches in these very rural areas.

This cache is located near the marker of Goodson. He was born Sept 5,1882 and died tragically on Sept 3, 1903. There was a gin located close to the area. He was working there when he fell in to the gin killing him.

The gentleman whom gave us the history lesson still lives in the area. He also gave us much information about other cemeteries and communities that had existed in the area.

You will be looking for a camoed matchstick contain that is very near the marker of Goodson. Please be very respectful of this area. Return the cache to its location as you found it.

Congratulations to Drives and TO for FTF
