Un tuffo nella storia e nelle acque cristalline dello Jonio, per
visitare le torri costiere attorno a Gallipoli: non un metro di
litorale doveva sfuggire allo sguardo degli uomini d'arme che
difendevano questo splendido tratto di costa dalle invasioni di
turchi e pirati attorno al 1600...
A dip into history and crystalline waters
of the Ionian Sea, to visit the coastal towers around Gallipoli,
built around 1600 to try to defend this beautiful stretch of coast
from the invasions of Turks and pirates...
Torre S.Caterina (una volta chiamata in dialetto locale
anche la torre "te lu scurzone" cioè "della serpe", forse a motivo
della presenza di tale animale nella zona oppure a causa dello
scoglio sottostante, che si insinua nel mare e simile ad un
serpente) venne costruita attorno al 1610, prendendo ad
esempio lo stile della vicina Torre di S.Maria dell'Alto, anch'essa
a base quadrata e con una bellissima scala monumentale. Il posto fu
scelto accuratamente in modo che la torre dominasse il porto
omonimo e nello stesso tempo facesse da raccordo per tutte le
comunicazioni che, provenienti dalla Torre di S.Maria dell'Alto,
fossero indirizzate alla Torre dell'Alto Lido (sovrastante
l'attuale "Montagna Spaccata" alle porte di Lido Conchiglie) e
viceversa.
Nel 1820 era ancora in buono stato, nella sua dotazione risultava
ancora un cannone di ferro ed era affidata alla Guardia
Doganale.
Attualmente Torre S.Caterina domina un incantevole porticciolo
ed un ridente villaggio turistico sul mare ed è raggiungibile
percorrendo una scalinata che si inerpica nell'ombra di una folta
pineta.
St.Catherine Tower (once known in local dialect also as "te
lu scurzone", meaning "of the snake", perhaps because of presence
of this animal in the area or because of the rock below, which
insinuates itself into the sea like a snake) was built around
1610, with the same style of the nearby S. Mary High (Santa
Maria dell'Alto) Tower, similarly square based with a beautiful
monumental stairs. The place was carefully chosen to allow to
overlook the harbor and at the same time to have a kind of link for
all communications from St. Mary High Tower and addressed to the
High Beach (Alto Lido) Tower (above the actual "Split Mountain" at
the gates of Lido Conchiglie) and viceversa.
In 1820 he was still in good condition, with an iron cannon and
assigned to the Customs Guard.
Currently St.Catherine Tower overlooks a beautiful bay and a
lovely village on the sea and is reachable along a staircase that
winds up in the shadow of a thick pine forest.
