Workyticket: As there appears to have been no response from the CO we are archiving this cache listing to prevent it from continually showing up in search lists and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements in the area. Geocache Description:

Longovicium is located on what was the Roman road Dere Street which links York (Eboracum) to Hadrian's Wall.

The fort is the typical 'playing card' rectangular shape with 4 gates and was surrounded by a bank and ditch for protection from attackers.
It was built in the mid 1st century AD and was in use through the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it was large enough to accommodate up to 1000 auxiliary troops.

The site has had little excavation work carried out, there has been some geophysics undertaken which has identified a bathhouse and two separate aqueducts feeding in to the site

A notice board by the site gives a little more information.

The site is a scheduled ancient monument; there is hope for further excavations to be carried out and for it to be opened to the public in the future.

There is plenty of parking in the purpose built lay-by right by the cache site. (The lay-by is for the Roman remains not just the cache!)
