Penguin Base Alpha is the first cache stashed by TheGeoPenguins, and is hidden along a public right of way just outside the main village of Church Aston
Church Aston is an ancient village and parish, situated 1 mile west of Newport, although recent expansion of both village and town have seen the boundaries merged.
Central to the village is St Andrews church - check GC1CXB0 – Shropshire Church Gems; and nearby is the disused railway line, another victim of the Beeching cuts but now home to GCRZB0 – The Ghost Train.
The search for Penguin Base Alpha will take you beyond the main village itself and out past ‘The Aston’ public house (formerly The Last Inn and now owned by BBC presenter and Heart FM DJ Nick Snaith who hails from Newport) onto Aston Hill which offers splendid views over the Shropshire countryside and beyond.
On a clear day, there is good sight to nearby Lilleshall Hill with its iconic monument to the Duke of Sutherland, the Wrekin steeped in tale and legend and beyond to the South Shropshire Hills, Long Mynd and into Wales.
The hiding place is along one of regular Geo-Dog walks so we will be able to keep an eye on its condition. Mind you, judging by the size of the critter holes nearby, probably best to keep clear after dark lol !!!
The cache is a medium size container with log book and plenty of room for swaps.
