Geocache Description:

A small screw top bottle concealed in a pile of rocks.

This cache is by the side of Sarn Helen, the Roman road which runs through the Brecon Beacons. This section near Ystradfellte is favoured by off-roaders; although it has a fairly hard surface in most places there are some challenges- notably the ford across the Nedd at Blaenedd Isaf just north of here.

A sinkhole is the result of a cavern roof collapsing as more limestone is dissolved. One or two of these holes nearby have actually been irresponsibly driven through by off-roaders and quad bikes; a pity as the turf can take years to recover.

The cache is located at the rim of a sinkhole. The area round Ystradfellte is honeycombed with caverns as the rivers have dissolved the Carboniferous Limestone which occurs in fault blocks between areas of Devonian Old Red Sandstone. Most notable is the Little Neath River Cave which is in the Upper Nedd Valley.
