The Pretorius museum was the house of President Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, the first president of the ZAR and founder of Pretoria. From ca. 1868 - 1896 he stayed on this farm which was given to him by the ZAR and he built the house, the blacksmith's shop, the coach house and stables himself. He also planted the oak trees in front of the house.

Die Pretorius museum was die woning van president Martinus Wessel Pretorius (1819 - 1901), eerste president van die ZAR en stigter van Pretoria. Hy het van ca. 1868 - 1893 op hierdie plaas gewoon wat deur die ZAR aan hom toegeken is en het self die woning, smidswinkel, waenhuis en stal opgerig. Die eikebome is na bewering ook deur hom aangeplant.

The architecture of the house is proof that the Cape architectural tradition had been maintained after the Great Trek into the interior parts of the country. The major part of Pretorius's own furniture and his personal possessions were destroyed during the Anglo Boer War (1899 - 1902). Honouring Pretorius's devotion to traditional and indigenous practices by favouring traditional architecture, every attempt has been made to restore the house to its original condition.

Die argitektuur van die woning is 'n bewys dat die Kaaps-Hollandse boustyl na die Groot Trek in die binneland behoue gebly het. Die grootste deel van Pretorius se eie meubels en persoonlike besittings is ongelukkig tydens die Anglo Boereoorlog (1899 - 1902) vernietig. Enkele oorblywende stukke van die familie en periode stukke is gebruik om 'n tipiese negentiende-eeuse woning voor te stel.

17 November 1819: Marthinus Wessel, the eldest son of Andries and Christina was born on the family estate. / Die oudste seun van Andries en Christina, Martinus Wessel, word gebore op die familieplaas.

16 December 1838: As nineteen year old boy, MW Pretorius took part in the Battle of Blood River. / MW Pretorius neem as negentienjarige seun deel aan die Slag van Bloedrivier,

19 December 1841: MW Pretorius was married to the 23-year old widow Aletta Magdalena Smit. / MW Pretorius tree in die huwelik met die 23 jarige weduwee Aletta Magdalena Smit.

6 January 1857: MW Pretorius was sworn in as first President of the South African Republic. XX May 1901: MW Pretorius was awakened in the cold nocturnal hours by British soldiers and questioned for more than two hours.
