Geocache Description:

A quick cache and dash.

This cache will take you back to a bygone era when rail was king.

Just at the side of Johnsonburg road sits the Allamuchy Freight Station built in 1906 to service the daily "milk run" to New York City.  Local dairy farmers brought milk-filled cans to the depot each day for transit by the Lehigh & Hudson River Railroad to the New York City.

There are only a few of these historic freight stations that still remain standing in New Jersey.  The railroad tracks that ran along the side of the station have long since been removed and the 100+ year-old building had been left to deteriorate for many years.  As you will see, it is now in the process of being restored.

A historical footnote: On Labor Day weekend, in 1944, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had his private train re-routed to stop here for a for a luncheon visit with Lucy Mercer Rutherford at the family mansion in Allamuchy.  The Rutherford Mansion, consisted of 23 rooms built in 1903-1904 on a 1000 acre tract.  The mansion is now commonly known as the Villa Madonna.

You do NOT have to climb up on the deck or move anything to make the find. The cache is clearly visible from the right angle.

The Allamuchy Freight Depot is listed on the national and state registers of historic places:  NEW JERSEY, WARREN COUNTY, Allamuchy Freight House, Rte. 612, Allamuchy, #02001056, LISTED, 9/23/02
