Geocache Description:

As you drive up the driveway to this early nineteenth century church, you can't help but be taken back in time. Built in 1825, Shiloh Methodist church was the mother church of many Methodist congregations in the Spartanburg County area. The rural, relaxing, quiet setting this church provides gives any visitor a chance to reflect back to a time when things were simpler without all the modern day gadgets and worries.

The congregation of this historical church formed shortly after the Revolutionary War around 1786 and met outside until a building could be erected. The first church, built of hand hewn logs, on these grounds was burned, and the building you see before you was its replacement in 1825. The congregation was first part of the Broad River Circuit of traveling preachers, and later joined the Enoree Circuit. In 1915, the last remaining members left Shiloh Methodist to join Inman Methodist, and the church has remained vacated since that time.

If you have a moment, read some additional history on the historical marker in front of the church, and explore the cemetery behind the church that has gravestones dating back as early as 1816. You may even have a chance to pet a horse or two that usually come visit when people are around. Enjoy your time here as you sign the log and remember a time that is quickly fading away.
