Osage Orange Hedgerow
It is not known exactly how this particular hedge came to be planted. The function of these hedgerows in historic Canada was to provide a wind break and they have often been described as a “living fence” because they kept farm animals in and kept other people’s out. This hedge was likely planted over 100 years ago by the Robinson family who had a house nearby. It is located on Torbram Road, south of Old School Road.
The hedge resembles ordinary orange trees with long sharp thorns. The genus of the tree is the Mulberry family. The oranges are NOT edible. Many uses for the plant include the fruit as a natural pest repellent as well as the wood for is prized for tool handles, treenails, fence posts, electrical insulators, and bows.
