A short walk along footpath through field, close to the former Roman Road between London and Colchester.
Before the A12 bypass was built in 1971, the main road between London and Colchester had for roughly 2000 years passed through the village of Boreham. Every main route needed its share of staging and resting inns.
A local historian determined timber framing in the Cock Inn to date from the 15th Century. The first mention of the building in historical documents can be found in the Quarter Sessions of 1582, when Dorothy Clarke, spinster of Burnham claimed that the accused John Fletcher of Coggeshall had tried to seduce her arranging to meet “at the sign of the Cock at Boreham” having promised to “provide a chamber for her in London”. Parish registers also record the burials of travellers who passed away on the Cock's premises.
A post box is built into the brickwork of the pub, a reminder of the days when the mail coaches delivered mail to the inn for sorting and onward transmission.
