Chester Burn Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not repaired it I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located in a small bit of hidden greenery beside the Cong Burn, also known as Chester Burn.

This river is largely hidden from view in central Chester-le-Street as since 1932 it has travelled through a covered culvert beneath the market place before emerging to flow into the River Wear in Riverside Park.

From the approach to the cache you can also see the Chester Burn viaduct. Built in 1868 for the North Eastern Railway this bridge carries the East Coast Mainline railway, is 230m long with 11 larges and is a Grade II listed building.

The cache is a small clip lock box with room for small swaps.

The terrain is rated as 2 as there is a short climb to reach the cache but the approach is on footpaths, 5 minutes from parking.

This cache can be tackled together with 'Chester Burn Viaduct' which is a 5 minute walk along the path.

IMPORTANT: Many maps, including Google Maps, inaccurately plot the course of the river along this section. The cache lies on the north side of the river next to the public footpath.
