Geocache Description:

While searching for a new cache site along the Newtown Creek, I saw a ladder and looked over the edge. Holly Molly! -- there were perhaps 8 large sailboats tied up along the bank and the only access were from ladders and planks of wood. How do people get to these boats?

Cache is a 35 mm film can. This is where Newtown Creek enters the East River. I wrote a paper while in Grad School at Queens College about the environmental impacts along the waterway. It was one of the most fascinating papers I ever researched. So here I am 15 years later looking to see how things have changed.

The Creek is actually an industrial tidal creek that has been cleaned up. In the early 1700's, it contained many more islands than it does today including Muscle Island that was removed during WWII. When New York State was first formed, Governor Clinton had a wilderness home at what is now 57th Street. The Mespaetch Indians took foot-long oysters out of this part of the Creek. Over time, it became more and more industrial. In 1909, it was suggested that the Creek be lengthened to connect with Flushing River. The $19 million price tag soon ended that dream. By the mid-20th Century, it was rated the dirtiest water way in America. It was the home of fat rendering plants, incinerators, slaughterhouses, oil refineries, and the like. The area where the cache is located was a railroad yard for the early LIRR.

Today, it has been cleaned up--a lot. This area is being gentrified and will soon rival nearby Manhattan as THE place to live.

Along the wall, you will find trash as well as strings and ropes leading into the water. The cache is not among the trash and the strings/ropes should be left alone--they tie up the boats and some are attached to crab traps (as I was told by one of the boat owners when I placed the cache.)
