Celebrating Grandpa's 81st Birthday in a Tree Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

SiandI: Oh, we have been in denial about this beloved cache....so sad to see it go. Grandpa is now 83 and still climbing. I hope someone else can make use of this space. We will always remember the good times we had here! Thanks for all the fun.

Geocache Description:

My first cache, in honor of my grandpa (who still climbs trees) and his 81st birthday.

Ok, so we want to hide this cache in a tree down by Ravenna right? Too good to be true. This cache led me down an odyssey of 3 attempts to submit this cache. Please enjoy the cache at all costs, as it has taken 2-3 weeks to make!

This cache was placed in honor of my grandpa, who celebrated his 81st on the day we placed this, and still has the guts to climb a tree! You heard me. He climbs trees. Just don't get shown up by an 81 year old when you look for this cache! I like this spot quite a bit because most muggles are distracted quite easily here. Muggle: "Hmmmm. I am gonna climb that tree over-- HOLY MOLY! A ZIP LINE! " Yes the cache is close to the zip line at Cowan Park. Just try not to get sucked into the zip line while looking for the cache. The cache is in a film canister hanging in a tree. This is also my first cache. I am going to tell you a little about my grandpa now.

Grandpa was born in Nappannee Indiana, September 7, 1929. His father was a flour miller, and when the depression hit, grandpa had to travel around with his dad to look for work. He had 5 brothers and two sisters, for whom his mom would make "Lard sandwiches" for them to take to school. He was the first person in his family to graduate from college, and then he went on to medical school. After he graduated from medical school, he served in the military just after WWII. He was stationed in San Fransisco part of the time, and knew he wanted to live there. After his time in the military he became a pediatrician. Then he married my grandma in 1961 and had 3 kids. He went to Africa to donate medical services. He has been to Somalia, Kenya twice, and Tanzania. He and my grandma still live in the same house my mom and her siblings were raised in, with a multitude of things from their travels.

Grandpa is a good hearted person who is all ways looking for a way to make us laugh. He is beloved by the local community, because he is so kind and fun to be around. He also knows just how to ask a question so that nobody gets frustrated. I strongly encourage you to write something in the log about your grandparents. If you don't know who they are, well, maybe it is time to do some digging!

It is with that that I leave you with a famous Grandpa quote. "Ya just gotta grunt". (He says this when he is doing hard things, like opening pickle jars. I can say firsthand it works! It might even work for climbing a tree!)

Congrats to fishiam for over-coming his "vertical challenge", and claiming the FTF. thanks to fishiam also for his advice. I was a little surprised that my first cache got so much feedback.
