Geocache Description:

Old Church, Lindean
Lindean, now included in Galashiels, was formerly a separate parish with a church situated 1 1/2 miles N of Selkirk; the building was abandoned about 1586 and is represented today only by the lower part of its rubble walls, which remain banked up on the outside but have been cleared on the inside, showing a height of 3ft 6 ins above the floor level.

On plan the building is rectangular and single-chambered, measuring internally 56ft 3 ins from ESE to WNW by 17ft 2 ins transversely; the entrance is situated in the S wall, 2ft 2 ins from the W gable. The only feature of interest that it contains is an incomplete 17th century memorial near the E end of the N wall, consisting of a horizontal panel once contained within an arched recess.

A 16th rybat from the entrance of a tower was found in the drystone dyke which encloses the churchyard.

Lindean is almost certainly the site of the abbey of Selkirk, founded by Earl David about 1119 and transferred to Kelso before 1128. This can be inferred with great confidence from the facts that the church is situated within the area of Selkirk Monachorum, the lands granted to the abbey at its foundation, and that no evidence can be found for any other ecclesiastical
site in the vicinity.
