Welcome to East Peak, the highest point in Douglas County, 9,591
feet!
This peak lies within the Nevada side of Heavenly Ski Resort.
Heavenly leases the use of the land from the US Forest Service, and
so the public is allowed to hike and bike. However, the ski runs
are sensitive, so PLEASE STAY ON EXISTING ROADS!
Couple ways to get here. All the route reports I've read start you
at the Tahoe Rim Trailhead at Stagecoach Lodge. Drive up Kingsbury
to the top and turn south on Tramway Dr. Follow that all the way,
past where it turns into a one-way road, and slowly down to the
parking lot of the Lodge.
Once there, hike up the trail on the right side of the chairlift.
At the top of the trail, turn and follow the road up. Once you pass
the top of North Bowl and the road turns straight south, you'll see
a small sign for Lower Bonanza Lookout. Behind you is an old
service road that switchbacks up a skirun. An employee told me its
ok to hike that. Otherwise, continue south towards the Gondola and
take the road that branches north.
Or, fork out the cash and ride the Gondola up from South Lake
Tahoe.
Either way, the view at the top is breathtaking and worth the
effort to get up here.
