This limestone and anchor monument beside the Shannon is a tribute to the bravery of sailors from this region who risked and sometimes lost their lives bringing vital goods into the country to help survive the deprivations of the Second World War.
The monument is in a small park fronting the Shannon River and adjacent to the Shannon Bridge and its busy roundabout. Across the river is St. Michael’s Rowing Club and some distance behind it is the large grey structure of what used to be Cleeve’s sweet factory and its tall red brick chimney. To the right is the scenic sweep of the Shannon up to Sarsfield’s Bridge, the Curragower rapids and King John’s Castle, in the heart of old Limerick.
The cache is a small plastic snaplock box. A log book, pencil, sharpener and some small items for trade are enclosed. Due to frequent muggle attacks, the cache is well protected and bona-fide cachers should bring strong gloves to assist their search. Please hide the cache carefully out of sight!
Warning! The park is fronting on to the river with a vertical drop of over two metres. There are no protective railings, so be careful, especially with children..
