The mystery of Blu has been resolved.
Hurricane Cindy felled Blu's ship and his hand on Lake Lanier in 1959.
A hand built wooden boat that sank more than forty years ago in a violent Lake Lanier storm has been found off the Lake Lanier shoreline, and discoverers say that parts of the vessel appears to have been found.
Old local favorite fisherman Blu was motoring his boat the Gimmer, carrying a cargo of corn from Cumming to, Gainesville on July 10, 1959 when he boated into a terrible storm, Hurricane Cindy. Along with sleet, there were heavy winds that whipped up waves of up to 12 feet. Blu and Gimmer crashed in the middle of the night. The Gimmer should have been able to handle the weather. The boat was only five years old, and the hull was reinforced with wooden arches. Blu found a cave on the side of the island that opened up to a holly bush. He scavenged parts of his boat to build a small shelter for the night. The storm continued the next day and a large pine tree cracked in half and landed on Blu's hand and it disappeared. He passed out from shock only to wake the next day with the storm still raging. He decided to swim to a distant light on the horizon to find help. Barely alive Blu found help at a fishing camp. He never found the island where he had shipwrecked. Many boats remain submerged in Lake Lanier, some vessels scuttled and others the victims of shipwrecks.
Blu became a famous one handed harmonica and blues singer. He inspired musicians such as the local Blu Maxx band and clothing company Georgia Blu. You have to hand it to Blu for surviving the storm. The lake can be deadly even when it is calm.
