Geocache Description:

This cache is NOT on Fort McPherson property. Park along shoulder of road or park at the cemetery and make the hike.

Fort McPherson was built in 1863 to ensure peace along the western frontier for the immigrants traveling along the Oregon Trail and the Native American inhabitants.
To meet the burial needs of the soldiers stationed at the post, a cemetery was established early in its history. The old post burial ground was later moved to southwest of the post and some 50 remains were moved to this location.
In 1873 Fort Mcpherson National Cemetery was established. The ground have under gone some renovation in the last few years, including adding more land for graves and resodding and leveling grave stones.
The services held here are very touching to all who attend.

Please take some time to walk through the cemetery. It is a very interesting part of history.
