A short walk from the gate at the top of what locals know as the slide. This cache is at the highest point of the Melba Hwy, where it crosses the Great Divide. But this cache has been been called Divided for so many other reasons.
Originally this cache was going to be called "Greed". Underneath is a pipeline. The north - south pipeline to be exact. It takes water from the Goulbourn river north of the divide and delivers it into Melbourne's catchment supply. It provides enough supply for 7 days to an ever expanding city each year. However this water that came from the north of the divide, comes from one of the most important food growing regions in Australia. All food sources require water to grow. The rather unhappy farmers along the route, also had their land compulsory acquired with compensation, for the pipe to be put through.
This water if it is was to stay on the north, would continue to flow down to the Murray, that has struggled to supply enough water for the environment and other users. This includes supply for Adelaide and very significant environmental areas like the Coorong, Red Gum floodplains, fisheries and many other areas.
With the change of government that promised no waste of public monies, the pipeline is being decommissioned less then a year after completion?

In the Black Saturday fires, this clearing eventhough freshly bulldozed made no difference to fire behaviour and direction.
