An easy veld cache with only a small logbook
The trail...
There are very few nature hikes in and around Bloemfontein. One therefore has to improvise your own trails. This walk traverses the old Brandkop race track and the hills bordering it. The distance depends on where you start. You may start anywhere in Universitas, Gardenia Park, Fichardpark or Pellissier.
Our version of the trail starts in Universitas and proceeds with Gardenia road through Gardenia Park to the railroad. Cross the tracks and walk along the railway tracks, passing underneath the N1. Turn left onto tracks leading to the old Brandkop race track. Turn left onto the race track and walk on it until you get to a gravel road leading towards the reservoir on Brandkop. Follow it around Brandkop until you are directly underneath the reservoir. Climb to the top of the hill with the 'rubble heap' shown in picture no. 2.
Walk past the reservoir in an easterly direction until you get to vehicle tracks. Follow these tracks to the east until you find an opening in the fence on you right hand side. Pass through the opening and proceed eastwards on top of the hills until your progress is stopped by a fence. Descend with the 'mud slide' and walk towards the railroad tracks. Cross the tracks and walk on the gravel road to the BP garage. Return to Universitas with the N8.
If you live in Fichard Park, start the walk either from the railway track, or the bridge to Pellissier (green path on the map).
The total distance (from my home) is approximately 8km. Although this trail doesn't offer spectacular views nor offers much of a challenge, it provides much needed exercise and the opportunity to experience the indigenous fauna and flora.
