This cache has been archived.

Ninja Reviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

The historical marker that is close to this cache (walk down the hill toward the mall) honors the 369th Infantry Regiment. The 369th was an African-American infantry regiment of the United States Army during World War I and World War II. Nicknamed "The Harlem Hellfighters" because of their toughness and never losing ground to the enemy, the 369th saw plenty of action in battle during the Great Wars. The 369th was the first all black regiment of the US Army, and being such helped pave the way for all African-American soldiers in the future.

The 369th Infantry Regiment spent time training at Camp Wadsworth which was located across the street where Westgate Mall now stands. Despite experiencing racism at Camp Wadsworth, both from soldiers and local, the 369th excelled in training, and eventually gained the respect of their fellow comrades. A couple of local business owners were even told they could leave town if they were unwilling to serve the soldiers of the 369th. Camp Wadsworth prepared the "Harlem Hellfighters" for the French terrain that they would experience when they first saw action alongside the French Army in 1918.

The 369th Infantry Regiment remained in the French Campaign throughout both World Wars. They never lost a soldier to capture, they never gave up a trench, and never lost any ground to the enemy. Nicknames like "The Harlem Hellfighters", "The Men of Bronze", and "The Black Rattlers" were given to them not only by fellow soldiers but by the Germans as well. Throughout the wars, over 100 men of the 369th were presented with American and/or French medals. Like all soldiers during that era, truly these great men need to be honored and respected for the many hardships they endured and the sacrifices they made including their own lives.
