Geocache Description:

When California became a state, in 1850, Mariposa County encompassed over “one-fifth of California”…it was truly the “Mother of all Counties.” Eventually, it was divided into all or part of eleven counties. A large part of Mariposa County began as a Mexican Land Grant purchased in 1846 for Colonel and Mrs. John C. Fremont.

When gold was discovered at the southern end of the Mother Lode…Mariposa became the destination for many gold seekers. In 1854 the hand built County Courthouse was completed and is still in use today…having the distinction of being the oldest in continuous use west of the Mississippi River.

The Mariposa Gazette, a weekly newspaper, was first published on January 24, 1854… and is still being published today.

Okay…now that I have dealt out a few facts to make you a bit wiser, stop in for our cache. Our hide is located at a place where you can gather all sorts of interesting literature about Mariposa.

Please limit your search to daytime only. Also, and most importantly, our cache is there with the approval of the Executive Director; Peter Schimmelfennig.

There is plenty of room to park and public restrooms are available.
