Geocache Description:

For NEPAG's Fall Event, the administrative team decided to change things a bit. We are bringing back the Shotgun Start Event that unimoggers (Caroline, Brad, and the kids) initiated in 2004 and ran for three years in '04, '05, and '06. Many thanks to Caroline for all her great ideas about how this huge venture should operate!!!

The date for this event is Sunday, October 17th (so we don't interfere with hunting on SGLs on Saturday). The rain date will be 10/24/10. Ten new, regular size caches will be hidden in parts of Luzerne, Lackawanna, and Monroe county. That's right...no micros....real regular sized containers....like finding an ammo can or similar sized container in the woods! All of the caches will involve hikes in the woods of 1.5 miles round trip or less.

The maximum number of teams that can participate is 10 to correspond with the 10 new caches. A team can be one geocacher like "walnut-tripper," or a team can be a family/couple like "The K-Team". A team can be no more than four persons unless it consists of a large caching family like "The K-Team" (which has 5 members: 2 adults and 3 kids). A team may also be two geocachers that like to go out together a lot like "Shoob&Sheeb and The Pirates of Wallenpaupack."

Spots may fill fast, so please sign up here ASAP even if you do not have a teammate yet. Teams can be formed once sign-ups begin.

The hunt will begin at the Lackawanna State Forest Manny Gordon Picnic Area outside of Thornhurst at 8 a.m. Each team will be presented with the coords for thier first cache at this time. If there are ten teams, each team has a chance for an FTF. If you are a tad slow or get lost, someone may just take it away. If there are less than ten teams, you may have an opportunity for more than one FTF. Inside each cache there will be envelopes with a name on the front that will match what was written on your original envelope with the first coords in it. Take this new envelope from the cache since you will need to know where to go for the second cache. There will also be puzzle pieces inside each cache. Build the puzzle as you go. On the back of the puzzle will be the coordinates to "victory cache" on Lackawanna State Forest property. This will be the cache that will verify the 2010 Shotgun Start (Fall) Event first place winner, second place winner, and third place winner.

At the same location, a "victory" picnic will occur starting at 2 p.m. until dusk. Please also sign up on this cache page if you are participating in the picnic portion but not the shotgun event portion. We will need a head count and to see what food and drink items will be available. Non-shotgun event participants will hang out, eat, geo-chat, and congratulate the winners. Participants will finish here after completing "victory" or just giving up for the day!! Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

To make it safer, with ten caches, you will travel to four different areas all within 20 minutes or less of each other. The event was designed to be competitive yet cooperative, with empohasis on safe driving, hiking, and searching throughout the event.

We look forward to seeing some great competitiveness as well as teams working together to have fun in the woods on a gorgeous October day!
