poco sobre el Cacique Jumacao a quien se le debe el nombre del
pueblo de Humacao
El jefe indio Jumacao fue el primer cacique en leer y escribir
español. Esto se corroboró cuando le escribió al Rey de España
quejándose que el Gobernador de la Isla no estaba cumpliendo con lo
quie se había acordado en el tratado de paz y que el, Jumacao y
otros caciques indios eran virtualmente prisioneros del régimen. En
la carta también se afirmó que era un hombre libre, capaz de
responder a sus propios hechos. El Rey de España estuvo tan
conmovido por la carta que ordenó al Gobernador de PR a que
obedeciera los términos del tratado. The Cacique Jumacao was the
first Cacique to learn how to read and write in Spanish. He proved
this by writing a letter to King Charles I of Spain, complaining
that the appointed governor of the island was not honoring the
peace treaty and that he and the other Caciques had virtually
become prisoners of the governor. He also stated that he was
responsible of his own acts. The King was moved by the letter and
ordered the governor to honor the terms of the treaty.
