Speckled Wood
One of a small series of caches which is intended to draw attention to some of the butterflies to be found on Ashtead Common.

The Speckled Wood butterfly is a familiar sight on Ashtead Common, particularly during the autumn when it is often disturbed as you walk along the woodland paths. The cache is placed a short way off one such path so you are likely to meet this attractive resident if you visit at the right time of year.
The butterfly likes partial shade with dappled sunlight where it will often sit in a small patch of sun. The males are very territorial and will quickly take to flight to intercept any intruder that passes by, before returning to bask in their chosen patch of sun. They are friendly insects and will allow you to approach for a quite close look before becoming spooked.
Ashtead Common is a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest.
This cache is placed with the kind permission of Natural England and under licence from the City of London who own the common.
Nearby are a number of other caches on both Ashtead and Epsom commons. Many attractive paths criss cross the commons to allow access - some of these paths can become very muddy in winter so choose carefully or bring boots!
On Street Parking is available at the waypoint shown. Please be respectful of local residents if you use it.
